PRODUCT - 01 / Auto Coverage

Auto insurance, built for the way Northern Coloradans actually drive.

I-25 commutes, mountain passes, hailstorms, deer at dusk. We write auto policies that hold up to all of it - with a local agent on the other end of the phone when something happens.

  • Coverage structured around how you actually drive and live in NoCo - not a one-size template.
  • Built to Colorado statutes and the realities of front-range driving.
  • A real local agent on every claim - not a 1-800 queue.
  • Licensed in Colorado and Wyoming.

Auto Insurance overview

What auto insurance actually pays for.

Thompson Insurance Agency provides auto insurance for residents of Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor, and surrounding Northern Colorado communities. Owned by Eric and Amanda Thompson, the agency has been voted Top 3 Insurance Agency in Northern Colorado three consecutive years (2023, 2024, 2025). Colorado is one of the strictest auto-insurance states in the country and the minimums went up in 2025 - the difference between bare-bones coverage and a properly structured policy is usually the difference between covering a deer collision out of pocket and not even thinking about it. Licensed in Colorado and Wyoming. To get a quote, call (970) 482-0078.

Most of our auto clients are surprised how affordable the real coverage actually is when it is put together right the first time.

Coverage breakdown

Six layers that make up a policy.

Each card is one piece. Some are required by Colorado; others are optional but almost always worth having. We will walk through what fits your situation when we talk.

01 - Required

Bodily Injury & Property Damage Liability

Colorado mandatory

Pays for the other party's medical bills and vehicle damage when you're at fault in an accident. Required by Colorado statute. This is the layer that protects your assets from a lawsuit - minimums protect the state, higher limits protect you.

CO minimum: 25/50/15. What we usually recommend: 100/300/100 or higher.
02 - Optional

Collision Coverage

Strongly recommended

Pays to repair or replace your vehicle after a collision with another vehicle or object - regardless of fault. Required if you're financing or leasing. Pairs with a deductible you choose.

Typical deductible: $500 or $1,000.
03 - Optional

Comprehensive Coverage

Critical in NoCo

Pays for non-collision damage: hail, wildlife strikes, theft, vandalism, falling tree limbs, fire. In Northern Colorado - where a single July hailstorm can total a windshield and roof - this is the layer that earns its keep.

Typical deductible: $500. Often pairs with: free glass coverage.
04 - Required

Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM)

Must be offered in CO

Pays your medical bills and damages when the other driver is at fault but has no insurance - or not enough of it. Roughly 1 in 7 Colorado drivers is uninsured. This is the coverage we tell people not to skimp on.

What we usually recommend: match your BI liability limits.
05 - Optional

Medical Payments (MedPay)

Worth adding

Pays medical bills for you and your passengers after an accident - regardless of fault, regardless of health insurance. Cheap to add. Closes the gap on deductibles and copays.

Typical limit: $5,000 or $10,000.
06 - Optional

Rental & Roadside

A few bucks/month

Pays for a rental car while yours is in the shop after a covered claim, plus towing, lockouts, jump starts, and flat-tire help. Inexpensive and well worth it when you actually need it.

Typical add-on cost: $5-$15/mo.

A quick word on deductibles.

A deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before insurance kicks in. Higher deductible = lower monthly premium, but more risk on you. We will usually recommend a deductible you could write a check for tomorrow without flinching - that's the right number.

Northern Colorado driving context

Why a local agent writes a better auto policy.

Online quote engines don't know what a Berthoud hailstorm looks like or how often elk cross Highway 34 in October. We do - and we structure coverage around the things that actually happen here.

01 - Wildlife

Deer & elk strikes spike at dusk October-December.

Comprehensive coverage (not collision) is what pays for animal strikes. Most of our clients carry it for exactly this reason - the I-25 corridor, Highway 287, and the canyons west of town see hundreds of strikes a year.

~$4,800 Average deer-strike claim, CDOT region 4
02 - Hail

Front Range hail can total a vehicle in eight minutes.

2023 alone saw multiple severe hail events from Fort Collins south through Loveland. Comprehensive coverage pays for hail damage; we make sure your deductible is not a separate wind/hail one that catches people off guard.

03 - Commute

I-25 between Fort Collins & Denver is no joke.

The North I-25 corridor logs some of the highest crash counts on the front range. Higher liability limits are not a luxury here - they are how you protect your assets in a multi-car pileup at 70 mph.

Auto FAQ

Questions we get a lot.

If your question isn't here, call us — we'd rather answer it on the phone than read about it in a help center.

Call (970) 482-0078
Colorado requires bodily injury liability of $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident and property damage liability of $15,000 per accident - commonly written as 25/50/15. Insurers must also offer (but you can reject in writing) uninsured/underinsured motorist and MedPay coverage. We almost always recommend going higher than the state minimum.
It depends on your assets, your commute, and your risk tolerance. For most NoCo households, we recommend 100/300/100 liability, matching uninsured-motorist limits, comprehensive with a $500-$1,000 deductible, and MedPay. We will walk through what fits when we talk.
Generally no - comprehensive claims (hail, wildlife, theft) are considered 'not at fault' and most insurance plans don't surcharge for them. Frequency matters more than a single claim. Specific rules vary by policy; ask us if you're unsure.
Most personal auto policies extend liability and physical-damage coverage to rentals in the US and Canada at the same limits as your policy. Coverage is often more limited internationally - we will confirm specifics before a trip.
Yes. We write policies for drivers across the full risk spectrum, including those with at-fault accidents, tickets, or SR-22 requirements. Rates reflect your record, but we will walk you through what to expect and put a real policy in place - not a runaround.
Most auto quotes come back within one business day. If you call during office hours with your current declarations page in hand, we can usually quote you right over the phone.
