Business Insurance overview

What business insurance actually pays for.

Thompson Insurance Agency provides commercial insurance for small businesses across Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor, Greeley, and the rest of Northern Colorado. Most NoCo small businesses fit a Business Owners Policy (BOP) structure that bundles general liability and property in one package, then layers on commercial auto, workers comp, and cyber as needed. Voted Top 3 in Northern Colorado three consecutive years (2023, 2024, 2025). Licensed in Colorado and Wyoming. To get a quote, call (970) 482-0078.

The right business policy depends on what you do, who you do it for, and what you'd lose if something went wrong. We walk through the basics on a 20-minute phone call and quote a real number - no questionnaire-and-wait.

Common business coverages

Six layers that fit most NoCo small businesses.

Not every business needs every layer. We'll walk through which ones apply to your business and build a policy structure - BOP, mono-line, or full commercial program - that fits.

01 - Core

General Liability

Core for most businesses

Pays for third-party bodily injury, property damage, and personal injury claims. The "slip and fall" coverage plus advertising injury and a few other categories. Most business contracts and commercial leases require it.

Typical limit: $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate.
02 - Core

Commercial Property

Buildings + contents

Covers your building (if owned), business contents, inventory, and equipment. Often bundled with general liability into a BOP. Important: this is NOT the same as a homeowners policy on a home-based business.

Limit: Replacement cost of building + contents.
03 - Often required

Workers Compensation

Required with employees

Required by Colorado law for businesses with employees (with limited exceptions). Pays medical and lost-wages benefits for on-the-job injuries. The premium is based on payroll and job classification.

Statutory limits for Colorado.
04 - If you drive

Commercial Auto

Trucks, vans, fleet

Covers vehicles used for business purposes - delivery vans, service trucks, fleet vehicles. Personal auto policies typically exclude business use, which can leave a major gap.

Match liability limits to BOP/GL.
05 - Modern essential

Cyber Liability

Data + breach response

Pays for the response to a data breach: notification, credit monitoring, forensics, regulatory fines. Increasingly required for businesses that handle customer credit cards, health data, or sensitive info.

Typical limit: $250k-$1M.
06 - Specialty

Professional Liability (E&O)

Service + advice businesses

For businesses that sell advice or services - consultants, accountants, designers, contractors. Pays for claims of negligence in the work you performed. Different from general liability.

Typical limit: $1M per claim / $2M aggregate.
NoCo small-business context

Why a local agent writes a better business policy.

The right business policy structure is not one-size-fits-all. A trades contractor in Loveland needs a different policy than a Fort Collins SaaS startup or a Windsor restaurant. We build to your actual operations.

01 - Trades

Contractors and trades businesses.

General liability with proper additional-insured wording for clients, commercial auto on trucks, workers comp on crews, plus tools-and-equipment coverage. We see a lot of NoCo trades policies that miss one of these four.

$1M Typical GL limit for trades
02 - Retail + food

Restaurants, retail, and storefronts.

Business Owners Policy (BOP) bundles GL and property cleanly. Add commercial auto if there are deliveries, liquor liability if applicable, and cyber for credit-card processing.

BOP Most common structure
03 - Services

Professional services and consultants.

Professional Liability (E&O) is the missing piece on many service-business policies. We pair it with GL for premises exposure and cyber for client-data exposure. Most service-business policies are simpler than people expect.

E&O Often the most important layer
Business FAQ

Questions we get a lot.

If your question isn't here, call us — we'd rather answer it on the phone than read about it in a help center.

Call (970) 482-0078
A BOP bundles general liability and commercial property into a single policy, usually at a lower combined premium than buying them separately. It works well for small-to-medium businesses (under ~$5M in revenue) with a fixed location. Larger or more complex businesses often need a separate package.
Colorado requires workers comp for any business with employees, with limited exceptions for sole proprietors, business owners, and certain casual labor. The premium is based on your payroll and the workers comp job classifications for the work being performed. We can help determine if your specific business is required to carry it.
General liability covers third-party injury and property damage - "slip and fall" coverage. Professional liability (Errors & Omissions) covers claims that your professional work was negligent, late, or wrong. If you sell advice, design, consulting, or services, you likely need both.
Usually not. Personal auto policies typically exclude business use. If you use a vehicle to make deliveries, transport clients, or move materials for your business, you need commercial auto coverage. Some occasional-business-use endorsements exist for personal policies; we'll review your situation.
