Motorcycle Insurance overview

What motorcycle insurance actually pays for.

Thompson Insurance Agency provides motorcycle insurance for riders across Colorado and Wyoming. Coverage includes liability (required by Colorado), collision and comprehensive (for the bike), uninsured-motorist (we strongly recommend), plus custom-parts-and-equipment, gear, and roadside endorsements. Colorado law requires the same liability limits as automobiles: 25/50/15 minimum, but we almost always recommend higher. Voted Top 3 in Northern Colorado three consecutive years. Licensed in Colorado and Wyoming. To get a quote, call (970) 482-0078.

MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) certified riders typically save 5-10% on premium. Seasonal storage during winter months can further reduce annual premium for riders who don't ride December-March.

Coverage breakdown

Six layers for a Colorado motorcycle policy.

Each layer matters more on a motorcycle than on a car. Smaller margin for error, higher injury exposure, and dedicated endorsements for what makes a bike a bike.

01 - Required

Bodily Injury & Property Damage Liability

Colorado mandatory

Pays the other party when you're at fault. Same 25/50/15 Colorado minimum as auto. We almost always recommend 100/300/100 - injuries from motorcycle crashes are typically more severe.

What we recommend: 100/300/100 or higher.
02 - Optional

Collision

For the bike

Pays to repair or replace your bike after a covered collision. Deductibles usually $250-$1,000. Required if you're financing.

Typical deductible: $500.
03 - Optional

Comprehensive

Theft + hail + animal

Theft is the big one for motorcycles. Also covers hail, fire, vandalism, animal strikes. We recommend it on any bike worth more than $3,000-$5,000.

Typical deductible: $250-$500.
04 - Required

Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist

Critical for riders

Pays your medical bills and damages when the other driver has no insurance or not enough. With ~14% of CO drivers uninsured, this is non-negotiable for riders.

Match your BI liability limits.
05 - Endorsement

Custom Parts & Equipment (CPE)

Aftermarket builds

Standard motorcycle policies cap aftermarket parts coverage at a low limit ($1,000-$3,000). If you've invested in pipes, suspension, body work, electronics - a CPE endorsement matches the actual value.

Add coverage to match your build cost.
06 - Endorsement

Gear (Helmet, Jacket, Boots)

Personal property

Helmets, jackets, boots, gloves, electronics - all the gear that goes with you, separately scheduled so a crash that destroys your gear doesn't come out of your homeowners deductible.

Typical limit: $1,500-$5,000.
Colorado motorcycle context

Why a local agent writes a better motorcycle policy.

Online quote engines don't know the difference between a Saturday Cache la Poudre ride and a Sturgis trip. We do - and we structure coverage around how you actually ride.

01 - Seasonal

Most NoCo riders are seasonal.

Lay-up storage rates can drop premium significantly for riders who don't ride December-March. We'll structure the policy so winter months don't cost what summer months do.

~30% Typical seasonal savings
02 - Routes

Cache la Poudre, Trail Ridge, Estes - real roads with real risk.

Higher liability limits aren't a luxury when canyon roads, wildlife, and tourist drivers are part of a normal weekend ride. We always quote at the higher tiers.

~14% CO drivers uninsured
03 - MSF

Safety-course completion = real premium savings.

A current MSF basic-rider or experienced-rider course certificate usually drops premium 5-10%. The course pays for itself in the first year for most riders. We surface it automatically at quote.

5-10% Typical MSF discount
Motorcycle FAQ

Questions we get a lot.

Yes. Colorado requires the same minimum liability limits on motorcycles as on cars: 25/50/15 bodily-injury and property-damage liability. Most insurance plans also require you to be offered uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, which you can reject in writing - we recommend against rejecting it.
Yes. Most motorcycle policies offer reduced premium during winter months (typically December-March) when the bike is in storage. Liability and theft/fire (comprehensive) typically remain in force during lay-up; collision can be dropped or reduced. We'll structure it so you're paying for what you're actually using.
A standard motorcycle policy caps aftermarket-parts coverage at a low limit ($1,000-$3,000). If you've invested more than that in pipes, suspension, body work, or electronics, you need a Custom Parts and Equipment endorsement. We'll itemize what you've added and add the right limit.
Yes - typically 5-10% off premium. Some insurance plans also waive a portion of the deductible after a covered claim if you have a current MSF certificate. We surface the discount automatically when we quote.
