Insurance in Colorado

Thompson Insurance Agency is a family-owned agency in Fort Collins, licensed across all of Colorado and Wyoming. We write auto, home, condo, renters, motorcycle, business, life, and recreational coverage for Coloradans from the Front Range to the Western Slope, most of it over the phone, email, and video, wherever in the state you happen to live. We have been family-owned since 1969, and Eric and Amanda Thompson are only the third ownership group in that history.

One state, many risks

Colorado is not one insurance market

A policy that makes sense in a Fort Collins subdivision can be the wrong policy for a cabin outside Estes Park or a farmhouse on the Eastern Plains. Colorado packs plains, foothills, high country, and the Western Slope into one state, and the risks that drive a home or auto rate shift as you move across it. Same coverage names, very different exposures.

Hail, almost everywhere

Colorado sits in the heart of the country's hail belt, and it is the one peril nearly every Colorado address shares. For most homeowners in the state, the roof is the claim. The wind and hail deductible, often separate from your main deductible and sometimes a percentage of your dwelling coverage rather than a flat amount, is where a lot of Colorado policies quietly differ from what their owners assume.

Wildfire and the harder-to-insure places

In the foothills and the mountains, wildfire risk has reshaped what coverage costs and, in some places, whether it is available at all. Underwriting now looks hard at defensible space, roofing material, and how far a property sits from a fire station and a hydrant. If your home is in a wildfire-exposed area, that is worth a conversation well before renewal, and we will tell you plainly what we can write and where the limits sit.

Distance is not a barrier

Most of our customers never set foot in our office. We quote, bind, and service policies by phone, email, and video, which means where you live in Colorado has nothing to do with whether we can help. A ranch outside Craig and a townhome in Fort Collins get the same agent.

The state in three parts

Three Colorados, three conversations

Most of the state's underwriting comes down to which of these you live in. We write all three from one Fort Collins office.

01 · Front Range

Hail, wind, and dense metros.

Where most Coloradans live, from Fort Collins to Pueblo. Hail and wind drive home claims; traffic density and theft drive auto. The questions here are about deductibles and replacement cost, not whether coverage is available.

02 · Mountains & Foothills

Wildfire, altitude, and second homes.

Foothills and mountain properties face wildfire underwriting, seasonal vacancy, and long distances to fire protection. Second homes and short-term rentals need coverage written for how they are actually used.

03 · Plains & Western Slope

Acreage, outbuildings, and distance.

On the Eastern Plains and the Western Slope, properties spread out: shops, barns, equipment, and acreage a standard other-structures limit was never sized for. Distance to service is exactly what phone-first coverage solves.

What we cover, statewide

Coverage across Colorado

Eight product lines, written for the whole state, from a Front Range townhome to a place at the end of a dirt road on the Western Slope.

One office, the whole state

How we cover the whole state from one office

We are in Fort Collins, but very little of what we do depends on you being nearby. Colorado licensing lets us write policies anywhere in the state, and phone, email, and video handle the rest. Most of our customers quote, bind, and service their coverage without ever driving to Milestone Drive.

What you get is not a call center. It is the same two owners and the same small team, whether your address is ten minutes away or on the other side of the Divide. When you call, someone here picks up.

Four markets have a page of their own, because what drives a policy in each one is different: Loveland, Windsor, Greeley and Cheyenne, WY.

Statewide FAQ

Common questions from customers across Colorado

No. We are licensed across all of Colorado and Wyoming and write policies statewide. Most of our customers never come to the office; we handle quotes and service by phone, email, and video.
Yes, though mountain and wildfire-exposed properties are underwritten more strictly: defensible space, roofing material, and distance to fire protection all matter. Send us the address and we will tell you straight away what we can write on it and where the limits are.
Talk to us before your renewal rather than after. Wildfire underwriting in the high country has tightened, and the earlier we look at your address the more time there is to sort out where you stand. We will be straight with you about what we can and cannot do.
Yes. Statewide licensing means the far corners of Colorado are as workable for us as the Front Range. Distance is what phone-first service is for.
No. Your rate is set by the carrier based on your address, property, and history, not by where our office sits. What a local agency adds is someone who knows Colorado and answers the phone.
Usually 10 to 20 minutes on the phone. No obligation, and we will tell you straight if we are not the right fit.
