Insurance in Windsor, Colorado

Thompson Insurance Agency writes auto, home, condo, renters, motorcycle, business, life, and recreational coverage for families in Windsor. Our office is in Fort Collins, about fifteen minutes west on Highway 392, and Windsor has been one of our fastest-growing service areas for the same reason it is one of the fastest-growing towns in Northern Colorado. We have been family-owned since 1969, and Eric and Amanda Thompson are only the third ownership group in that history. Most quotes take 10 to 20 minutes on the phone.

What Windsor homeowners and drivers deal with

Wind and hail coverage

Windsor has a clearer sense than most Front Range towns of what wind can do. The 2008 tornado is still a reference point for anyone who lived here then, and it left a lot of households paying closer attention to the wind and hail section of their homeowners policy than the average homeowner ever does.

Two settings decide what a wind or hail claim is worth. The first is your wind and hail deductible, which is often separate from your main deductible and is sometimes written as a percentage of your dwelling coverage rather than a flat dollar amount. On a $600,000 home, a 2% wind and hail deductible means $12,000 out of pocket before the policy pays. The second is whether your roof is scheduled at replacement cost or actual cash value. Replacement cost pays to put a new roof on. Actual cash value pays what the old roof was worth after depreciation.

Send us your current policy and we will tell you which way yours is written.

Insuring a new build for what it costs to rebuild

A large share of Windsor housing went up in the last twenty years, and new construction comes with an insurance question that older homes do not raise as sharply: what number goes in the dwelling coverage field.

The instinct is to use the purchase price. That is usually wrong, because the purchase price includes the lot, and the lot does not burn down. What the policy needs to cover is the cost to rebuild the structure at today's labor and materials prices, which in Northern Colorado has moved a long way in a short time. Insure to the purchase price and you can end up over-covered on land you would never need to replace, or under-covered on a rebuild that costs more than the house did.

It is also worth being clear on what your builder warranty does. A warranty covers workmanship and defects for a defined period. It is not insurance, and it will not respond to hail, fire, or wind. They are two separate things, and new homeowners often assume the warranty is doing more than it is.

The good news on a new build is that new roofs, new wiring, and new plumbing frequently rate better than older housing stock. That is worth asking about directly.

The Larimer and Weld county line

Windsor sits across two counties, and not everyone knows which one their address falls in. It can affect how a policy is rated, along with a handful of things that have nothing to do with insurance. If you are not sure which side you are on, we can check it in about a minute.

What we cover in Windsor

Coverage for Windsor families

Eight product lines, each structured around the realities of a Windsor address, from a new build in Water Valley to the boats at Windsor Lake.

01

Home Insurance

New builds in Water Valley and Highland Meadows and older homes closer to downtown are different conversations. For most Windsor homeowners we start with the replacement cost number and the wind and hail deductible.

02

Auto Insurance

Windsor is a commuting town. Highway 392, I-25, and the run into Fort Collins, Greeley, or Denver put real annual mileage on a car, and mileage drives premium. Comprehensive coverage matters here too, since hail does not only hit roofs.

03

Business Insurance

Windsor commercial base has grown alongside its housing. General liability, commercial auto, workers comp, BOPs, and cyber for local operators. Tell us what you run and we will walk through what your business needs.

Windsor Lake, the Water Valley lakes, and everything within a short drive. Coverage for the boat, the trailer, and the gear.

05

Renters Insurance

For apartments and rentals around downtown Windsor and along the 392 corridor. Covers your belongings, your liability, and somewhere to stay if you cannot live there.

06

Condo Insurance

An HO-6 policy fills the gap between your unit and the HOA master policy: walls-in, contents, and liability. In newer developments it is worth reading exactly where the association coverage stops.

07

Motorcycle Insurance

Seasonal use, custom parts, and gear coverage for riders who put the bike away in November.

We know Windsor

We are fifteen minutes west on 392, which means Windsor is not a market we serve from a distance. We have watched the subdivisions go in off 257 and we know Water Valley and the older streets near Windsor Lake are two different underwriting conversations. We know how many people here point their car at I-25 every morning.

You are not calling a call center in another state. You are calling an office fifteen minutes from your house, staffed by people who drive the same roads you do.

Windsor sits between two markets we know just as well: Loveland is fifteen minutes west and Greeley fifteen minutes east. We write the rest of Colorado from the same desk.
